In recent years, the availability of free online education resources for the Chartered Accountancy (CA) exam has surged. Platforms like YouTube, Telegram, and numerous online portals offer a plethora of free video lectures. Yet, despite this wealth of free resources, the passing ratio for the CA exam has not shown a significant increase. For example below is the comparison of the results of the First paper of Financial Accounting in the CAF stage.
Attempt | Autumn 2013 | Spring 2024 |
Students Appeared | 2,869 | 9,961 |
Students Passed | 840 | 2,759 |
Percentage passing | 26.05% | 27.70% |
It's interesting to note that while the number of students appearing for the CA exam has increased, the passing percentage hasn't seen a significant rise. I took this exam in the Autumn of 2013, that is why I chose it as a comparison. We had no access to video lectures or official study material from ICAP. We relied on various books like Financial Accounting by Mukharji and Introduction to Accounting by Frankwood and also consulted PBP publications and ACCA study materials. Teachers didn't provide notes, and platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook weren't part of our study resources. Very few people had access to the internet, and there was no concept of video lectures or online classes whatsoever.
However, the study landscape has changed drastically since then. We have an abundance of everything free and accessible notes, lectures, revision classes, and cheap and fast internet.
This paradox raises the question: Why are students still failing despite abundant educational content?
The key issue is that online education extends far beyond just video lectures. When we think of online education we only think of video lectures. Success in the CA exam demands a comprehensive system that includes effective testing, responsive query handling, a well-structured study schedule, interactive learning, and collaboration with peers and teachers.
Let’s discuss why these elements are crucial for improving the passing ratio.
1) Comprehensive Testing System
One of the primary reasons students fail the CA exam is the lack of a rigorous testing. Video lectures alone cannot ensure the retention of complex concepts. Assessments and mock exams are essential to evaluate students' grasp of the material. A comprehensive testing system identifies weaknesses, provides feedback, and helps students familiarize themselves with the exam format.
2) Responsive Query Handling
Video lectures are often one-way communication, leaving students with unresolved doubts. An efficient system should live Q&A sessions and dedicated support channels (such as WhatsApp) where students can seek clarification on difficult topics. This interactive component of learning ensures that students do not feel isolated and can continuously engage with the teacher.
3) Structured Study Schedule
The CA exam covers an extensive syllabus, and self-paced learning can sometimes lead to procrastination and ineffective time management. A structured schedule, with clear milestones and deadlines, keeps students on track and ensures consistent progress. All colleges offering online classes should provide personalized study schedules and enforce them. Consistency is the key to success in CA Exams.
4) Interactive Learning Tools
Engagement is a key factor in effective learning. Interactive tools such as milestones, completion percentages, quizzes, and gamified learning experiences can make studying more engaging and enjoyable. These tools encourage active participation, helping students to better retain information and apply concepts practically. Interactive elements can break the monotony of passive learning, making the preparation process more dynamic and effective.
5) Peer Support and Collaboration
Learning in isolation can be challenging and demotivating. Platforms that facilitate peer support and collaboration can create a sense of community among students. Study WhatsApp groups and discussion Live sessions enable students to share knowledge, solve problems together, and provide mutual encouragement.
6) Continuous Feedback Mechanisms
Regular feedback is crucial for continuous improvement. In addition to test scores, colleges should provide detailed feedback on assignments and practice exams. Constructive feedback helps students understand their mistakes, learn from them, and make necessary adjustments in their study approach. Continuous feedback ensures that students are aware of their syllabus and can make informed decisions about their preparation strategies.
But that’s not all, there are tons of other factors of failure that encapsulate the changing behavior of students. When I compare students of the current era to my era I see a huge difference. I will share with you the sad change in students generally. But that is a matter of another article.
