The Punjab government has introduced a significant initiative aimed at ensuring accessible and affordable transportation for students, individuals with disabilities, and senior citizens in Lahore. As part of this new program, these designated groups will enjoy free travel on the Orange Line and Metro system, albeit for a limited three-month period.
This announcement is a welcome relief for many residents of Lahore who heavily rely on public transportation. The primary beneficiaries of this initiative are students up to the 12th grade, persons with disabilities, and senior citizens. However, university students are required to pay a nominal fee for their commute.
To avail of the free travel facility, eligible senior citizens need to carry a valid identification card. On the other hand, students must wear their uniforms and present their student ID cards when using the Orange Line and Metro.
In addressing the initiative, Ibrahim Murad, the Caretaker Minister of Transport in Punjab, mentioned, "This initiative is being introduced for an initial three-month period, during which we will assess the expenses incurred. After this evaluation, a decision will be made regarding the continuation and potential expansion of this beneficial facility."
While many students advocate for the permanence of the program for all students, regardless of their level of education, there are also calls for improvements to the token system to alleviate long queues and delays experienced by students commuting to schools and colleges. For those interested in utilizing this initiative, it is crucial to adhere to the outlined procedures to ensure a smooth travel experience on the Orange Line in Lahore.
