The Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) has published a new Combined Competitive Examination (PMS) pattern that comprises

Major Reforms in PMS Punjab 2027

1. Revised Examination Structure

The PMS 2027 examination will comprise:

Written Examination: 1,100 marks
Interview/Viva Voce: 300 marks
Grand Total: 1,400 marks

2. New Mental Ability & Reasoning Test

A new 100-mark Mental Ability & Reasoning Test has been introduced as Paper II.

It will assess:

Logical & Analytical Reasoning
Quantitative & Numerical Processing
Reading & Verbal Comprehension
Decision-Making & Problem-Solving

Qualifying Requirement: 33%

Negative Marking: Applicable

The qualifying threshold may be revised later based on analysis.

3. Pakistan Studies Divided into Two Papers

Pakistan Studies has been divided into two separate 100-mark papers:

Pakistan Studies-I: Pre- and Post-Independence History of Pakistan
Pakistan Studies-II: Geography, Society, Culture, Institutions, Governance, and related aspects of Pakistan

4. New International Affairs Paper

International Affairs has been introduced as a separate 100-mark compulsory paper, covering areas such as international politics, foreign relations, geopolitics, geostrategy, and geo-economics.

5. New Economy & Development Paper

A separate 100-mark Economy & Development paper has been introduced, covering economic and developmental issues relevant to Pakistan.

6. Revised MCQ + Subjective Pattern

The subjects for Papers VI to X are:

Islamic Studies / Ethics for Non-Muslims
Pakistan Studies-I
Pakistan Studies-II
International Affairs
Economy & Development

Each paper will carry 100 marks, divided as follows:

25 marks: MCQs
75 marks: Subjective/Descriptive Questions

7. General Knowledge Paper

General Knowledge will constitute a separate 100-mark MCQ paper.

8. One Optional Subject

Candidates will select one optional subject carrying 100 marks from a prescribed list of 30 subjects in the given syllabus advertisement.

9. How does the new PMS syllabus differ from the old PMS syllabus?

The PMS Punjab 2027 reforms introduce significant changes to the examination structure compared with the previous PMS scheme. The overall marks remain unchanged at 1,400, but their distribution has been revised. Under the old scheme, the written examination carried 1,200 marks, and the interview carried 200 marks. Under the new scheme, the written examination is reduced to 1,100 marks, while the interview is increased to 300 marks. A major addition is the 100-mark Mental Ability and Reasoning Test, which assesses logical reasoning, numerical ability, reading comprehension, decision-making, and problem-solving skills. The test has a 33% passing requirement and includes negative marking. This makes analytical and reasoning skills an explicit part of PMS preparation.

The structure of Pakistan Studies has also been changed. Previously, Pakistan Studies was assessed through a single 200-mark paper. Under the new scheme, it is divided into two 100-mark papers. Pakistan Studies-I focuses mainly on history, while Pakistan Studies-II covers geography, society, culture, institutions, and governance. Another important change is the separation of International Affairs and Economy and Development into distinct 100-mark compulsory papers. This gives greater importance to international politics, foreign relations, economic challenges, development issues, and their relationship with Pakistan.

The assessment pattern has also been revised. Five compulsory subjects include 25 marks of MCQs and 75 marks of written questions, while General Knowledge is assessed through a separate 100-mark MCQ paper. In addition, candidates now select only one optional subject from the prescribed list of 30 subjects.

Overall, the new PMS scheme places greater emphasis on compulsory subjects, analytical reasoning, current affairs, economic understanding, international developments, MCQs, and writing skills. Candidates therefore need broader conceptual knowledge and stronger analytical abilities rather than relying mainly on extensive optional-subject preparation.
